I consider this night a success! Our meal was as followed: Australian Grass Fed Tomahawk Ribeye Steak, Roasted Potatoes, and Seasoned Asparagus. Everything came out perfectly! Our Tomahawk Steak was medium rare and seasoned with salt and pepper. Roasted potatoes were seasoned with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Finally, the roasted asparagus was seasoned with salt and pepper. I think this had amazing complementary flavors with texture variety. The tenderness of the steak, crunchiness of the asparagus, and softness of the potatoes made for a culinary journey.
First off, I could tell the difference in these more expensive wines. They finished very well on the pallet. I will say the Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon had a very dry finish to it. This would equate to Wine Folly's text describing its medium to high tannin levels. It went well with the saltiness of the asparagus. The Chardonnay was a little overpowering to the rich Tomahawk Steak. The rich buttery taste with a hint of vanilla was overwhelmed with the juicy tender cut of meat. The aromas gave a strong fruity flavor. Klinker Brick Zinfadel has a high level of acidity which gave a slight burn after taste. However, it was a good pairing with the buttery tenderness of the steak. The sweetness gave an almost teriyaki taste to the meat. It seemed to cancel each other out to some degree.
Since the Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon was a full-bodied red it paired well with the meat, according to Wine Folly. Wine Folly also mentions that the mid-bodied white (Chardonnay) should go well with the asparagus. I had no problem eating any of the food paired with the wine. None of the pairings seemed like a clear clash of tastes in my pallet. In conclusion, the culinary experience of the evening was truly a triumph, marked by a meticulously crafted meal that exemplified the finest ingredients and culinary skill.
